Tour dates begin Feb 14, 2008
Kiran Ahluwalia sings original ghazals and Punjabi folk songs, backed by her five piece ensemble; featuring tabla, harmonium, guitar, bass and tanpura. An award winning artist, known for her lush compositions, stellar voice and captivating live performances, she has toured widely across North America and into Europe. Her most recent album, Wanderlust (Times Square/Fusion3) is a strikingly beautiful work which was just this week nominated for World Music Album of the Year at the 2008 Juno Awards.The album’s distinctly Indian flavour also features hints of Saharan blues, jazz improvisation and especially Portuguese fado. Three of the songs were recorded in Lisbon, with members of fado sensation Mariza’s band and the results are a stunning blend of the two styles, creating a compelling harmony through the beautiful yearning of their shared themes and similar poetic lyrical styles.
In 2005, the Village Voice called Kiran “a rising international star” and since then, the chorus of critical acclaim has only continued to grow. World music tastemaking magazine fRoots noted a sure legacy in her music saying hers was “A voice destined to enchant more than one generation” and Songlines magazine noted “Ahluwalia's voice is caressing and seductive and the arrangements are magnificent.”
Kiran begins a Canadian tour on February 14 in Toronto (as part of amulti-artist Valentines’ Day bill.) The tour continues with dates in Thunder Bay on Feb 17, Winnipeg on Feb 19 (where she performs with the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra), Calgary on Feb 21 and Vancouver on Feb 23. March yields tour dates as part of the Women Of The World tour featuring Kiran alongside Ndidi Onokwulu and Tanya Tagak on March 5 in Guelph, March 6 in Oakville, March 7 in Barrie and March 8 in St. Catharines. Kiran returns to Toronto to headline a show at Hart House at U of T in Toronto on March 9 and then does a guest spot with the Global Divas concert on March 26.
Kiran is touring in the U.S with the Rez Abbasi
group. Dates include San Francisco, Los Angeles, Sante Fe, Tuscon, Portland, and El Paso. |
